Champions Tournament Round 1: Iona1 (Devourer’s Host) v Sloan1 (Heavy Metal)
This is my opponent from the team tournament, that round 1 game where he murdered two birds, a battle engine and my caster in one turn. Everything that I said last game still applies. Great guy and it’s always a bucket of fun. The only downside is that Legion didn’t have Lylyth3 on their masters pairing, because he had a wonderful idea for 5 huge bases which would have been brilliant fun to play into.

List Choices: He took Sloan, I took Iona. I had a Krueger list as well but, yeah, never my intent to drop it.
Scenario: Invasion
Priority: I won the roll and chose to go first, he chose the side to stop me getting into a trench.
Preys: Bloodtrackers preyed Caine, Brighid and Caul preyed the hunter on my far left.
Turn 1
Circle
Iona puts Sure Foot on the Bloodtrackers, Phantasm on the left Ravagers and advanced. Ghetorix casts Spiny Growth and charges. The Feral warps Protective Plates and runs. The Spirit Cauldron gave corpses to Lord of the Feast (I stuffed this bit up, I thought corpses was within 10” and didn’t correct this until game 3 today). Everyone else runs.
Cygnar
He says he’s going to feat and kill as much as he can. And boy howdy does he. Sloan casts Guided Fire and shoots the Feral, doing 14 all up. Caine Trick Shots a Bloodtracker and bounces into Nuala, killing them both. A Firefly misses a Bloodtracker twice, the next shoots and kills 3 with 1 shot and 2 with the next shot. The next Firefly goes and leaves 1 tracker alive. One Hunter shoots and does 7 to the Feral and then misses. The next does 1 and misses. The last second last Hunter goes, misses its first and then does 7 more damage. This leaves the Feral on 1. Ace hits, does enought to kill it and bounce and kill the last Bloodtracker. The final Hunter shoots a ravager, kills it, then shoots and kills the next but I tough and heal 2.
Turn 2

Circle
Iona drops her upkeeps, advances and Feats. She also casts Phantasm on herself. The Lord of the Feast gets Puppet Strings from the Cauldron. He advances through the forest, shoots and hits a Firefly that is nearby, birding into melee with Sloan. After using puppet strings to re-roll a double 1 damage roll, he kills Sloan and we both agree he may not be the most balanced model…

Thoughts: Opponent: We had a bit of time talking at the end, and we figured the turning point was him having to put an extra 2-3 Hunter shots into the Feral. If less had to get into position to shoot him, then he may have been able to better screen Sloan. It also could have meant he got more Ravagers dead, meaning it may not have all snowballed into a bad place (we took back LotF and played it out to see if it changed and it didn’t, all engaged on my feat and just rubbish). He is also not too happy with Sloan which I get. A bit of bad luck and then you’re engaged with a bunch of lights and just yuck.
My play: He talked to me after the game and told me how it could have worked if I had held the trackers and ravagers back more, so that he only really had hunter shots into anyone, then jammed hard and charged on my turn 2 and it really sounded much better than where I was in my turn 2. So next time I will try that. Otherwise I think it was a matchup I was heavily advantaged into. Should have put Phantasm on the other unit of Ravagers, as only 1 was in range to be shot on the unit I put Phantasm on anyway. Or one of the heavies. Ah well.
